$## What an ultrasound does

Ultrasound (sonography) uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of internal organs and soft tissue. It is safe (no radiation), relatively inexpensive, and widely available. Ultrasound is particularly useful for imaging the abdomen, pelvis, thyroid, liver, kidneys, gallbladder, and for pregnancy monitoring.

Typical prices at Bangalore diagnostic centres

Abdominal ultrasound: Rs. 500 to 1,500

Covers liver, gallbladder, spleen, kidneys, and pancreas. One of the most commonly ordered ultrasound scans.

Pelvic ultrasound: Rs. 500 to 1,200

Ordered for gynaecological evaluation (uterus, ovaries) or bladder assessment.

Obstetric ultrasound (pregnancy scan): Rs. 600 to 2,000 depending on trimester and type.

Thyroid ultrasound: Rs. 400 to 1,000

Scrotum or breast ultrasound: Rs. 500 to 1,200

Whole abdomen and pelvis (combined): Rs. 800 to 2,000

Doppler ultrasound (blood flow assessment): Rs. 1,000 to 3,500. Used for vascular imaging, detecting clots, or assessing blood flow in organs.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound (shoulder, knee tendons): Rs. 600 to 1,500

What affects the price

Scan type and complexity: Doppler studies cost more than standard B-mode ultrasound.

Body region: Combined abdominal-pelvic scans cost more than single-region scans.

Centre type: Hospital sonography units charge more than standalone diagnostic centres.

Radiologist involvement: Reports signed by a qualified radiologist are standard at NABL labs. At smaller centres, confirm that a radiologist reviews the scan.

Preparation

Abdominal ultrasound: Fasting for 4 to 6 hours before the scan. This allows the gallbladder to fill and improves visualisation of abdominal organs.

Pelvic ultrasound (transabdominal): A full bladder is required. Drink 1 litre of water 1 hour before and do not urinate until after the scan.

Thyroid, breast, musculoskeletal: No preparation needed.

Pregnancy scans: Preparation varies by trimester and scan type. Your doctor's referral will specify.

How long does an ultrasound take?

15 to 30 minutes for most routine scans. Doppler and complex scans take longer. Results are often available on the same day.
