Pre-marital health checkup in Bangalore: tests, cost, and what to expect

A practical pre-marital screening list for Bengaluru couples — what is medically useful, what is optional, and typical 2026 prices.

A pre-marital health check is increasingly common in Bangalore. Done well it answers three specific questions for the couple: are you or your partner carriers of an inherited condition the child could inherit, do either of you have an undiagnosed infection that could be transmitted, and is there a chronic condition that needs management before pregnancy.

This is not a fertility test (that comes later if needed) and not a virginity test (a discredited concept that no modern clinic should offer).

Core panel (recommended for both partners)

Test Why
CBC Detects anemia, can flag thalassemia trait
Blood group + Rh typing Rh incompatibility planning
HbA1c Diabetes screen
TSH Thyroid status (affects fertility and pregnancy)
Lipid profile Cardiovascular baseline
LFT Liver health
Urine routine Quick infection / sugar / protein screen
Hemoglobin electrophoresis (HPLC) Thalassemia / sickle-cell carrier — important in some communities
HIV (with consent and counselling) Treatable; status changes pregnancy plan
Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) Vaccination / vertical transmission planning
Hepatitis C antibody Treatable infection
VDRL / TPHA (syphilis) Cheap, treatable, often missed

Often added (case by case)

  • Rubella IgG (for the woman): if non-immune, vaccinate at least 1 month before trying for pregnancy.
  • Varicella IgG: same rationale.
  • AMH (anti-Mullerian hormone): ovarian reserve — useful only if delaying pregnancy past mid-30s, or if PCOS / irregular cycles.
  • Semen analysis: not routine; consider if there is reason to suspect a problem.
  • Karyotype: only if family history of recurrent miscarriage or genetic condition.

What is usually overkill in a Bangalore pre-marital package

  • Tumour-marker panels (CA 125, CA 19-9, CEA, AFP, PSA) in asymptomatic young adults.
  • Extensive food / inhalant allergy testing.
  • "Hormonal balance" panels with 15 hormones in someone with regular cycles.
  • Repeated imaging "for screening".

The right test list comes from a conversation with a physician about your specific risks — not from a one-size-fits-all package.

Typical Bangalore prices

Package Range
Basic pre-marital (per person) ₹1,500 - ₹2,500
Comprehensive (per person) ₹3,500 - ₹6,500
Couple's package ₹5,000 - ₹12,000 (10-20% off two singles)
Add-on: HPLC for thalassemia ₹600 - ₹1,200
Add-on: AMH ₹1,200 - ₹2,500
Add-on: rubella / varicella IgG ₹400 - ₹900 each

Most NABL chains in Bangalore offer pre-marital packages with home blood collection plus a separate visit for ultrasound if needed.

How to use the results

  • Both reports should be reviewed together by a physician — not just handed over by the lab.
  • An abnormal infection result (HIV, HBV, HCV, syphilis) is treatable / manageable, not a deal-breaker. Counselling is part of the workflow.
  • A positive thalassemia carrier in one partner is a reason to test the other; two carriers need genetic counselling.
  • Rubella non-immune means vaccinate, then wait 4 weeks before conception.

Privacy

Reports are confidential and should be released only to the patient (or to a nominated doctor with written consent). If a Bangalore centre offers to share reports with parents or relatives without your permission, walk out.
