NABL-accredited labs in Bangalore: why accreditation matters
What NABL actually certifies, how to verify a Bangalore lab in 2 minutes, and the practical difference for your report.
"NABL accredited" is on almost every Bangalore lab's signboard. It is also the single most important quality marker for a diagnostic report — provided the accreditation is real, current, and covers the tests on your prescription.
What NABL is
NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) is the autonomous body under the Quality Council of India that accredits medical labs to ISO 15189. Accreditation covers:
- Equipment calibration and maintenance schedules.
- Technician training and competency assessment.
- Internal quality control runs every day, every shift.
- External quality assurance — the lab tests blinded samples from a national programme and must match the consensus result.
- Sample handling, labelling, and chain of custody.
- Reporting format, reference ranges, and turnaround SLAs.
The equivalent for hospitals and imaging units is NABH.
What it does not cover
- The cost of the test (NABL has no view on pricing).
- The friendliness of the phlebotomist.
- The accuracy of the doctor's interpretation.
- Tests sent out to other labs — make sure the test you booked is on the centre's NABL scope.
How to verify in 2 minutes
- Ask the Bangalore centre for its NABL certificate number — every accredited lab puts it on the report header and the front desk.
- Go to
nabl-india.org→ "Search Accredited Labs" → enter the number. - Verify: the lab name matches, the certificate is current (not expired), and the scope includes the test you need.
If the centre cannot produce a number, treat it as non-accredited.
What changes when a lab is NABL accredited
- Less variability between repeat tests at the same lab.
- Better hemolysis and contamination rejection — fewer "please come back for a redraw" calls.
- Standardised reference ranges clearly printed.
- Traceable QC records if you ever need to dispute a result.
Studies comparing accredited and non-accredited labs in India consistently find lower error rates in accredited labs, particularly for chemistry analytes (lipid, LFT, KFT).
Bangalore reality
Most of the large chains operating across Koramangala, Indiranagar, HSR, BTM, Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Marathahalli, Whitefield, Electronic City, Hebbal, Yelahanka, and the Outer Ring Road are NABL accredited. Standalone neighbourhood labs are a mix — many in Jayanagar, Rajajinagar, Banashankari, and Vijayanagar are accredited; some are not. Verify before sending blood.
For imaging (MRI, CT, USG, X-ray), look for NABH accreditation of the centre and DNB / MD Radiology qualifications of the reporting radiologist.
When non-accredited may be fine
- Very simple tests (urine routine, blood grouping) where the methodology is hard to get wrong.
- Emergency situations where the nearest lab is what you have.
- Repeat tests where you already have an accredited baseline and just want a trend.
For anything that drives a treatment decision — diabetes, thyroid, vitamin D, lipid, hormone panels — use an accredited lab.
