How to choose a diagnostic centre you can trust
Accreditation, sample handling, turnaround, and the small details that separate a good lab from a great one.
Picking a diagnostic centre is rarely a casual decision. You usually need a result you can act on, and you need it on time. Here is the short checklist we use when we evaluate centres for our directory.
1. Look for accreditation
NABL accreditation (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) is the single strongest quality signal in India. It means the lab's processes, equipment calibration, and staff competence are independently audited.
For pathology and radiology, also look for:
- NABH for hospital-based labs
- ISO 15189 for medical laboratories
- AERB registration for any centre running CT, X-ray, or mammography
2. Ask how samples are handled
The result is only as good as the sample. Ask:
- Is the sample processed on-site, or shipped to a central lab?
- How long between collection and processing?
- For home collection, what's the cold-chain protocol?
A centre that can answer these without hesitation is usually the one to pick.
3. Turnaround time, in writing
A "same-day" CBC and a "same-day" thyroid panel mean different things. Ask for the expected report time for your specific test, and whether you'll get a digital report.
4. Doctor availability for radiology
For ultrasounds, MRIs, and CT scans, the radiologist's experience matters more than the machine. Ask who reads the scans and how soon the report is signed off.
5. Price transparency
Good centres publish prices or quote them clearly over the phone. If you have to negotiate or chase quotes, that's a red flag.
Use the search to filter centres in your city, then call ahead with this list. It takes ten minutes and saves a lot of grief.
