Home sample collection in Bangalore: how it actually works
Booking windows, fasting rules, what to do if the phlebotomist is late, and how to make sure your sample reaches the lab safely.
Almost every NABL-accredited diagnostic centre in Bangalore now offers home sample collection — for blood, urine, and in some cases stool. Done right it is more convenient and just as accurate as visiting the lab. Done wrong, you get a delayed report and a re-draw fee.
How to book
- Pick a centre on Locatemycentre and filter by "Home Visit".
- Call or WhatsApp the test list and your full address (with apartment block, floor, and a landmark — Bangalore addresses confuse first-time visits).
- Confirm the all-inclusive price: tests + visit fee + GST (no GST should appear; if it does, query it).
- Book for the next morning if any test requires fasting. Most Bangalore phlebotomists arrive between 6am and 9am.
- Ask for the phlebotomist's name and phone number the night before.
Fasting rules
- Fasting required (8-12 hours): fasting blood sugar, lipid profile, insulin, GTT.
- Not required: HbA1c, thyroid panel, vitamin D, vitamin B12, CBC, LFT, KFT (for routine screening), most hormone panels.
- Water is fine during the fast. Black coffee/tea without sugar is acceptable for lipid/sugar.
- Continue regular medications unless your doctor says otherwise. Skip thyroxine until after the draw.
The collection itself
A trained Bangalore phlebotomist should:
- Confirm your name and the test list against the slip.
- Wash hands and wear gloves.
- Use a fresh single-use needle and vacutainers; show you the seal before opening.
- Label the vials in front of you with your name and date.
- Mix the vials gently (especially EDTA-purple-top for CBC) — vigorous shaking causes hemolysis.
- Apply pressure for 60+ seconds; place a sterile bandage.
If the phlebotomist takes more than two attempts, ask the centre to send a second technician. Repeated pricks at home are a sign to switch.
Sample transport: the part that goes wrong
Once collected, the vials must reach the lab within 2-4 hours and be transported in a temperature-controlled box. Issues we see in Bangalore:
- Traffic: a Whitefield-to-central-Bengaluru drop during peak hours can take 90 minutes. Ask the centre which lab the sample is going to.
- Pooled pickup: some agencies wait until they have 5-6 collections in your area. Your 7am draw may not reach the lab till noon. Ask.
- Special handling: some tests (LDH, potassium, vitamin B12, certain hormones) degrade if sample sits too long. Confirm the centre's protocol.

When to skip home collection
- Glucose tolerance test (multiple draws over 2 hours).
- Specialised tests needing immediate processing (ABG, fresh urine for casts).
- Children under 2 — most Bengaluru home-collection phlebotomists are not pediatric-trained; visit a centre.
- Patients with poor veins — go in person where multiple staff are available.
After the visit
Most Bangalore centres email a PDF report within 6-24 hours. Save it. The same report should also be downloadable from the centre's website using a patient ID. Bring it (and any previous reports) to the doctor — they want trends, not single values.
