Delhi NCR has one of the highest urban diabetes rates in the country, and the number of tests marketed as diabetes checks has exploded. Most people need only a small subset. Here is what each test actually tells you, when to do it, and what to expect to pay in 2026.

The four tests that actually matter

• Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) - one point in time, needs 8 - 12 hours of fasting. Rs. 100 - 250.
• Postprandial glucose (PPBS) - 2 hours after a meal. Rs. 100 - 250.
• HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) - average blood sugar over the last 2 - 3 months. Rs. 350 - 650.
• Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT / GTT) - gold standard for gestational and borderline diabetes. Rs. 400 - 900. Needs 2 - 3 hours at the lab.

Any NABL lab in Delhi, Gurgaon or Noida can do all four. HbA1c is the most useful single test for someone with a family history and no diagnosis yet.

When to test

• No symptoms, family history, over 35: HbA1c once a year.
• Prediabetes (HbA1c 5.7 - 6.4%): HbA1c every 6 months + FPG.
• Diagnosed diabetes: HbA1c every 3 months, FPG monthly, PPBS as advised.
• Pregnancy: GTT at 24 - 28 weeks (mandatory).
